3 Things You Should Know Before Seeing WARCRAFT

The Warcraft move is only a few days away and if you are like the majority of the population that has never played or heard of the Blizzard’s mega hit game series, the trailer is probably pretty confusing for you. It’s ok though. We are here to help. Here are 3 things you should know before seeing Warcraft.

It’s not based on World of Warcraft

Unless you have been living under a rock for the last 12 years you have heard of World of Warcraft (WoW). It has become a pop culture phenomenon and yet Warcraft does not follow any of the storylines from World of Warcraft. It’s not even based on Warcraft III, the epic story of Arthas Menthil, who became corrupted by evil and eventually became the Terrifying Lich King.

Instead the movie is based on Warcraft: Orcs & Humans, the original real-time strategy game that started the franchise in 1994.        The movie is not a direct translation. Many things ended up on the cutting room floor in an effort to simply the story for non-Warcraft fans.            . Unless you are a die-hard fan, you won’t be familiar with the villains and heroes that show up throughout the movie.

Alliance vs. Horde

The trailer may lead you to believe that the movie is only about Humans and Orcs. That is not the case. In the Warcraft universe there are many different races. At the time this movie is set, there are elves, dwarves, gnomes, trolls, goblins, and Tauren. Eventually with the arrival of the orcs the world is split into factions: the Alliance composed of the humans, elves, dwarves, and gnomes; and the Horde, composed of orcs, trolls, and Tauren. Although the movie doesn’t really show it, we’ve seen a few shots in the trailers of elves and dwarves, but their involvement is minimal at best.

As the World of Warcraft universe expanded over the years, other races have popped up from time to time. But the only thing you really need to remember it Alliance and Horde. In the Warcraft Movie, these factions are categorized as Good (alliance) versus Bad (horde).

The Real Bad Guys

While the invading horde may seem like the villain here, the truth is that the really bad guys are the Burning Legion.  They are ones behind it all, evil manipulators who control the orcs in the background. They tore across the galaxy, destroying planets enveloping subjugated races into its folds. There is A LOT more to the burning legion than this but for the movie purpose that is all you really need to know. The orcs and horde look bad but there is a bigger more powerful force controlling them.
